Ever wonder how certain scenes remain in your mind after watching a movie? Well, the answer lies in post-production work. Be it adding filters to adjust the “feel” of the scene or by amplifying effects through visual effects tools, good post-production work is key in adding that extra touch to make a movie unforgettable.
I got to visit Digital Studio 2L, a post-production studio that uses the latest digital technologies to create exciting and spectacular visuals for movies. They specialize in color correcting and computer graphics and I was able to catch a glimpse of how it works at the studio! First, the compositor selected a plate (plate refers to a specific scene of the movie) to work on. Then, he added filters that were already in the software to adjust the colour temperature of the scene. It was so amazing to see how different coloured tones could evoke different emotions towards the scene! Like blue for rainy and sad scenes and yellow for mostly day or historic scenes. He also showed us how the lighting could be adjusted through the software by using tracking points to indicate where the light hits on the faces of the actors, making sure that their faces were visible in contrast to the background.
Digital Studio 2L has worked on major projects like the recent Train to Busan and it was so cool to learn how post-production work plays a huge role in enhancing the visuals and bringing out emotions of the movie. It was such an honor to be able to visit their studio and now, I finally know how movies look flawless on screen.
